Appreciations from Anton’s friends
Its a sad loss for all of us . Anton was gifted and talented not only in medicine but also in other fields. Despite his age he volunteered to help Covid 19 patients who were in need of medical care . Anton should be commended for his bravery. I will be praying for him.

This is indeed such a tragedy. Anton was a  'giant', accomplishing great things  beyond the field of medicine in his writings. No doubt there would have been  more things to come  in the years to come but no more.  It is  also so sad we rejoice the accomplishments of our friends often after their passing. Victor summarized well our friendships that go back to medical school days. He will be remembered for his humbleness in the face of  remarkable achievements.
May he rest in peace

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Anton's passing. He was a flamboyant free spirit and one of the bright lights among our batch mates. There is nothing more noble than to lay down your life in the service of fellow humanity and he was indeed that. He will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences to his family

It is with great sadness, shock and grief I learned about passing away of one of good friends and batch mates.  He has always been a vibrant character from the medical school days and he succumbed to this virus having opted to help NHS from his retirement. That speaks volumes of his desire to serve others. Please pass our condolences to his family on our behalf.

A giant slain by a virus
His family will miss him

The music thus far in my life has died
We had 2and half weeks of unforgettable weeks together in India this year in January. He was fighting fit and his belligerence remained vibrant and palpable.
We danced, drank, laughed and argued and fought on the streets of Varanasi like little school children on vacation. His zest for life remained untouched despite his advancing years
Goodbye my soul mate
Victor Wimalasingham and Santali

I am shattered to hear of this sad news. Never thought this kind of tragedy would come so close to home once again in my life.  He was such a vibrant and versatile person with immense talent. What a dedication to humanity and to medicine. Jeya and my self would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family and may his soul rest in peace. In sadness,
 Aana Anandanesan and Jeya

We are so utterly shocked by Anton's loss in such a sudden and tragic manner. It will be a long while before we make sense of his loss and grief.
He was a colourful character, a man of many parts. In his 'spare time', he ploughed his own lonely furrow with incredible dedication and long hours of labour: historian of Srilanka, historian of Medicine and Science, Bibliophile, Antiquarian. And along with all that, a dedicated clinician and  bon vivant!
The shock and sadness will ease with time, and the many of us who knew him from Peradeniya and have followed his multifarious careers would remember him with amazement and pride.
Our prayers are with Vasantha and their children, and all the wide family.
Xavier and Malar Emmanuel.

We were shattered, to say the least, when we heard the sad news of our good friend Anton. He was my class mate at St Sylvester’s College in Kandy. While we spent time bogged down with books, he spent his time partying and having a good time. Nevertheless, the outcome was the same!
We had minimal contact during the medical school days as we were in different unis. We then caught up for lost years in the UK. We always looked forward to the invite for his summer parties which we never missed. I can never forget the good time we had at his parties.
His loss is not only a great loss to his family but also to his wide circle of friends. We express our deepest sympathies to Vasanthi, his children and the family. May his soul rest in peace.
Andrew & Daya Nayagam

Our batch mate Anton  did us proud  when he volunteered to be in the front line  battling Covid 19 . Despite his age, knowing very well that he was taking a big risk. he put his duty as a physician to take care of patients  as his first priority and unfortunately succumbed to the Corona virus infection.
In addition to the field of Clinical Medicine, Anton ventured out after obtaining his specialist qualifications and showed his prowess as an author and a historian as well. His two monumental and very valuable books on the History of Medicine & Illustrated History of Sri Lanka showed us his immense knowledge about historical facts.
It is very sad indeed that he had to face death in this sudden & most unexpected manner but he died as a medical hero.  My condolences to his wife Vasanthi & the children.
May his soul rest in peace.
Chandrika Pathirana
